Wenn das Volk die Schönheit und Güte Desdemonas preist, kann Otello an einen Verrat durch seine Frau erst nicht glauben ...

When the folk pay homage to the beauty and goodness of Desdemona, Otello cannot believe that his wife would cheat him ..

doch wenn sie ihn in Namen Cassios um Verzeihung und die Wiederernennung zum Kapitän bittet, ist des Mohrs Eifersucht und Argwohn erneut geweckt. Er schmeißt Desdemonas Taschentuch, das er ihr selbst geschenkt hatte, zu Boden.

But, when Desdemona starts to beg him in the name of Cassio to forgive him and to put him back into the rank of a captain, Otello's jealousy and suspicion awakes again. He throws the handkerchief, he had once given to Desdemona, to the ground.

Jago fordert es von ihr, um es als 'Beweis' in Cassios Haus zu verstecken.

Jago requests the handkerchief from his wife to put it later into Cassio's house as a 'proof' of Desdemona's unfaithfulness.

Otello gerät immer stärker unter den fatalen Einfluß Jagos und gemeinsam schwören sie Rache für den vermeintlichen Verrat von Desdemona und Cassio.

Otello falls more and more under Jago's sway and together they swear revange for the alleged betrayal of Desdemona and Cassio. 

Desdemonas Unschulds Bezeugungen sind vergeblich. Otello schenkt ihr keinen Glauben mehr. 

Desdemona's protestations of innocence are fruitless. Otello does not believe her anymore.

Listig läßt Jago ein Gespräch zwischen ihm und Cassio, der mit Desdemonas Taschentuch zu Jago kam, belauschen.  Otello bemerkt nicht, daß Cassio von seiner Geliebten Bianca spricht anstatt von Desdemona. Otello beschließt, Desdemona in der kommenenden Nacht zu töten.

Cunningly Jago arranges that Otello would hiddenly listen to the conversation between Jago and Cassio, who had brought the handkerchief with him, he had found in his house. Otello does not realize that Cassio is speaking of his lover Bianca and not about Desdemona. The Moor decides to kill Desdemona in the following night.
