Gran Teatro de Liceo, Barcelona, October 7, 1999Gran Teatro de Liceo reopened with Puccini's TurandotBarcelona/bp. With a gala-performance of Puccini's opera Turandot the Gran Teatro de Liceo had been reopened at Barcelona on October 7, 1999, after a five-year-lasting phase of reconstruction. In January '94 the stage and the auditorium of the stately building was destroyed by fire. It is supposed that the stage curtain had caught fire during welding work. First inaugurated the Liceo had been in 1847, but was rebuilt in 1862 after a fire in 1861. Making use of Spain's arts and crafts the splendid building has risen from the ashes in all its original splendor and magnificence, but with the advantage of top modern technical equipment. In the presence of the Spanish king and his royal family the guests of the reopening gala saw a opulent Turandot production by Nuria Espert under the musical direction of Bertrand de Billy, who will be the musical director of the Liceo for the next five years. Giovanna Casolla sang the titlerole, Maria Bayo the part of Liù and Jan Blinkhof the role of Kalaf. Like before the blaze the Liceo will concentrate in the future on works of the 20th century.
